I'm curious, which recorder are you referring to? The new DVD-RAM or the 5.25 inch MO? Both are expensive, but the RAM is more geared towards consumer and the 5.25 MO is definitely in the professional/business/government arena.

My earlier comment was in regards to the 4X speed CD-RW drive that records on 650 MB CD-r and Rw media. This hits the consumer market squarely as well as certain business/industrial markets. Approx 4 million CD-RW drives were sold to the market in '98, and is expected to reach an installed base of 210 million drives by 2004. The CD-R media (not CD-RW...yet) is expected to be purchased to the tune of 1 billion disks in 1999 by end users.

Assuming PM can get their marketing act together and be a part of this 'hockey stick' growth curve, they just may be able to figure out a way to make a profit!

I'm not holding my breath though, just my shares.
