See my previous post - the $ are linked to several "products", some of the most costly of which are intellectual property rights, or a license to those rights. HW is a small part of the total price. One might argue that some of these rights are not very useful without the hardware, but even that is not always true. And in any event there is no risk of the product getting damaged or lost - it does not exist in the physical world in the first place.

Looking at the contractual arrangements for big systems, and understanding what is actually being bought and sold in contract terms is a wonderful exercise. I bet John Kogilman could give you some examples...
