Actually you got it wrong..but I'm sure a slip.

It is the gene itself that is injected into the penis not the protein. Once inside the penis, the penis cells use the gene to make the channel protein.

Some human genes, eg for insulin, can be put into a microorganism. These miroorganisms are grown in a test tube and make the insulin. The insulin is purified and then injected into the man.

I'm not sure how expensive the gene therapy treatment will be. It will be easy to make vast quantitites of the gene construct fairly cheaply growing up in bacteria. Easier than many chemical syntheses I would say.
