UMAX 2348.TW offers new low-price Mac compatibles
FREMONT, Calif., Feb 18 (Reuter) - UMAX Computer Corp said Tuesday it was offering a new entry-level computer at the lowest price available for Macintosh-compatible personal computers. It also said it had cut prices across its existing product line.
The new SuperMac C500/180 with a 180-megahertz PowerPC 603e microprocessor will carry an estimated street price of $1,349 and a $50 manufacturer's rebate for a limited time.
UMAX said it has reduced prices for its entire SuperMac family of Macintosh-compatible systems. UMAX licenses the Mac OS from Apple Computer Inc .
It said the price reductions, which range from roughly 7.0 percent up to 20 percent, are effective immediately.
For example, the SuperMac C600/200 megahertz machine now carries a street price of $1,799, down $200 from the previous level. The company's high-end SuperMac S900/200 with a dual processor system now runs about $4,499, down $300.
"With price reductions across our entire product family, we are driving our price/performance advantage over the Wintel platform to more aggressive levels, creating a compelling reason for new users to consider a Mac OS compatible system," said Andy Chang, a UMAX vice president of sales and marketing.
The SuperMac C500/180 system targets the consumer and education markets. The computer ships with 16 megabytes of random access memory, an 8X CD-ROM player, a 1.2 gigabyte hard drive, a keyboard and a mouse. A monitor must be purchased separately.
UMAX's move to cut prices comes amid concerns about falling market share for Apple Computer's own Macintosh-brand computers over the last year. Analysts consider UMAX's growth to have largely come at the expense of Apple Computer.
