Who's this "Dennis" to whom you refer? Is he T.Hoares promoter, or is he that nice worldbank "liason" Orly was so fond of quoting? That name escapes me just now. And I just gotta ask...were you asked to carry home any goodies, one ounce or bigger for the good of the team?

And whatever happened to Hung Kim?
And Bernie?

I have never understood how so much gold is "permitted" to be so smoothly smuggled out of Mali and other developing nations by Westerners. I've never traveled abroad, so I don't know the answer to this one, honest! Surely foreigners see our greed coming like a blaring red fire-engine about 40' in front of us whenever we travel.

Aren't there ANY customs checks of individuals or their baggage between Vancouver BC and Bamako? or Bamako and Vancouver BC.
Don't they know about metal detectors?

I've always wondered something else as well...
A) did you get to got into any of the "villages" for the shopping
experience, local scenery if you please?

B) In a nation so rich with alluvial and elluvial gold, is there gold "for sale" in those open air markets? And if so, was the mali gold visible and in plentiful amounts? And how was the price after currency conversions? A bargain or horrendous premiums to rich westerners?

I'd reeeeeeeeally like to hear about some of that side of your trip.
