Post from A Neonatologist;
We've been using Surfactants to treat Respiratory Distress Syndrome for years. Most common are of calf lung extract(Survanta & InfraSurf). Surfaxin (DSCO's product) has a few potential marketing advantages. #1, it's purely synthetic with decreased risk of allergic reaction & cheaper to produce. #2, They have the "Use Patent" for treatment of Meconium Aspiration Syndrome which is currently undergoing clinical trials. (On the FDA fast track entering phase 2-3) This means that even if the other Surfactants work to treat MAS, the labeled use of them for this indication would constitute patent infringement. Will be interesting to follow.

Just returned from a conference in Vail where the preliminary Data was presented by one of the Doc's involved in the phase 1-2 trials. Survival was similar in both groups but the Surfaxin treated group had a lower incidence of requirement for ECMO, (an extremely invasive procedure with a lot of morbidity.. putting a baby on pulmonary bypass). The FDA finally realized that this endpoint (decreased requirement for ECMO) would be sufficient to warrant approval. That's why they designated the drug for FAST-Track approval, something they rarely do for drugs used to treat babies. Need to do a little more DD, but will probably pick up a few thousand shares. Think it's trading close to it's 52 week low recently since most of the biotechs have suffered at the expense of the Hot Net stocks.
