If that is your belief, then I can understand why you're so worried.
I personally, don't subscribe to that theory, for if there were no stock market, the US dollar would be worthless, and the world would be thrust into a series of international conflicts that would probably have us more worried about our survival as a nation than where we can put our 401K and IRA contributions.
But you see, you have no evidence that such a dire scenario will transpire, just as I have no evidence that it won't.
Btw, did you check out the most recent butterfly options contracts on gold and the XAU for Jan, 2000?? Gold has been getting pummeled of late and were it not to find a triple bottom here, probably will be heading for $270/ounce. And with the threat of IMF gold sales overhanging the market, you just might see it.
But Ken, even during the great depression there was a stock market. You're owing shares of a gold company's stock places you and that company as much as risk as any other equity security.
But I believe there will inevitably be a stock market. There was one during the great depression, WW2, and the Vietnam War. And decline in the stock market during Y2K is merely a buying opportunity for me to pick up some fine companies on the cheap.
