The Nikkei stock average of 225 leading issues rose 660.86 points to end at 16,378.78, the highest finish since July 31 last year. "Securities firms' trading on their accounts was not so active ahead of the long weekend but there were some players who wanted to push prices up to take advantage of the timing," Kosaku Inagaki at Global Securities Co. Ltd. said. The market is closed Monday for a national holiday. Friday's surge more than offset Thursday's 3.4 percent tumble, which broke a long rally of rising prices. nandotimes.com Charles
