I wonder where AT&T may go shopping for its "wireless" technology to provide local telephone services... ;-) Perhaps another monster order is in the offing for NN... ++++++++++++++ March 19, 1999 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AT&T Plans to Enter Some Areas Using 'Fixed Wireless' Technology By REBECCA BLUMENSTEIN Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL NEW YORK -- AT&T Corp. is moving forward with plans to use "fixed wireless" technology to provide local telephone service in some communities the company doesn't reach with cable-TV lines. C. Michael Armstrong, AT&T's chairman, said the company has been able to sharply lower the cost of its long-time fixed wireless project, called Project Angel. The new cost structure makes it realistic to offer fixed wireless products where AT&T fails to secure agreements with local cable operators. AT&T Prepares Global-Bond Deal That Could Raise up to $8 Billion (March 18) "If I can't reach a reasonable deal, I have an alternative," said Mr. Armstrong in a speech at the Merrill Lynch Telecommunications Conference in New York. The new technology involves attaching an antenna-like device to the side of a house. AT&T can then provide as many as four telephone lines of service for an installation cost of about $750 a home. The lines could carry voice, high-speed data and video, similar to what AT&T hopes to sell to consumers via cable lines. AT&T plans to test Project Angel in an unnamed metropolitan area this year.
