Although, ATT's application would have been more behind the scene in the form of switches and other infrastructure type items and basically transparent to the average consumer. I did a search and found this site at LUCENT (formerly Bell Labs), I remembered that William Shockly invented it, but I had the wrong year, 1947 is the answer! Forgive me, I wasn't even born yet. lucent.com
