The IPO was overpriced.

So are most others. Anybody who regularly buys IPOs and holds them for 16 years is a fool. Even if we assume that VLSI is worth 39, you would've only tripled your money in 16 years. You would've done better with T-bills. Paying 4x BV is too much for most companies.

The performance of VLSI is pretty good. Most of the other 1983 IPOs are bankrupt or were bought out at a loss.
