Benny, in some ways, shorting stocks seems like a waste of societal resources. On that level, based on all available info, the point of the market is to efficiently allocate capital to its most efficient uses and, thus, benefit all of us. Shorting provides more (not less info) about how to do this allocation. In that way, a rising short level in a stock can reflect overvaluation, a wrong direction and maybe reallocation in a different company/sector should occur. Markets which don't permit shorting can end up as highly inefficient markets in my humble opinion. Even in a secular bull market, I applaud the efforts of shorts to make their case.
