I did much the same thing last month. I had some Feb 20 calls that I bought for $0.25 and were worth over $5. I exercised just before expiration. If I had sold the calls, I'd have paid taxes on the gains. I've now got the stock at a basis of $20, which I think will look like a great price at the end of the year.
