Web Portal Excite Courts Hollywood By Sponsoring Awards Gala,

Dow Jones Online News, Friday, March 19, 1999 at 09:36

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Internet portal operator Excite Inc. moved to
court Hollywood by co-sponsoring a key event at the Screen Actors Guild
Awards festivities last week, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.
Excite (XCIT) made a charitable donation of $60,000 and a further
undisclosed payment to display its banner at the SAG gala following the
awards show, the Times said. As part of the sponsorship, the Web portal
got the right to host exclusive online chats with SAG lifetime
achievement award recipient Kirk Douglas and other actors, the paper
said.
The pact was aimed at getting Excite known among big Hollywood
players. In an effort to boost name recognition and draw Web surfers and
advertising dollars, many portals have forged alliances with media and
entertainment companies. Infoseek Corp. is partners with Walt Disney Co.
in the Go network, General Electric Co.'s NBC owns stakes in CNET Inc.
and that company's Snap portal, and Lycos Inc. is in the midst of a
high-profile merger with USA Networks Inc.'s Internet and televison
retail businesses.
Excite is being acquired by At Home Corp., which provides a
high-speed Internet service over cable-TV lines.
