Chip off the big block

The tech stock pick of the week at The MarketMaven'sReport is Conexant (CNXT). Michael Murphy of the California Technology Stock Letter says the company was born earlier this year when Rockwell (ROK) spun off its chip operations. Murphy says he's fond of communications IC stories and is especially intrigued by this one because of the valuation. The company is also sitting pretty because of the fallout from the big battle Rockwell once fought with Lucent (LU) over the 56 kilobit modem standard. The two competing systems eventually merged into what is now the industry standard and Murphy says the modem business makes up 80 percent of Conexant's personal computing division. Murphy also says the company's management team looks strong, but sales this year will be flat or down. Murphy thinks growth will be in the 20 percent range thanks to new products in the mix. He says Conexant could be called a turnaround play, but it could unlock big value as it focuses on higher growth communications markets. Murphy puts a 12 month target price on Conexant at $38 a share. (CBS marketwatch)
