IBM building $700 million PPC development center
by Mike Flaminio - <mailto:flaminio@insanely-great.com>

Amid rumors of the "PowerPC breakup," we've received
news about IBM new chip development center. The $700
million facility is scheduled to open in 1999. IGM was told
that the East Fishkill, NY center will further PowerPC
development. We were also told that the facility will
develop chips that will contain up to 200 million transistors.
This is about 30 times more than the microprocessor chips
in a typical desktop or notebook computers.

The facility will be among the first to produce chips on
12-inch silicon wafers. The plant will use IBM's copper
manufacturing process and advanced X-ray lithography
technology.
