This is actually quite amusing:

Warning over loophole in new GM laws

by Ian Fletcher
This is London
19 March, 1999

Trading standards watchdogs warned today that loopholes
in the Government's new laws on GM foods may be
exploited by manufacturers and lead to further confusion
for shoppers.

The Institute of Trading Standards said it welcomed the
new labelling laws with a cautious "two cheers".

It said that products containing GM soya and maize will
need to be clearly labelled subject to certain exemptions
which include additives like emulsifiers, soya bean oil and
trace elements. However, the trading standards officers
warned that the regulations do not cover GM tomato
purée or yeast, which may be present in the same foods.

The institute gave two examples of its concern - one
caterer selling a pizza which contains GM tomato purée
but no GM soya or maize; and the package which
declares the food to be "GM free" but which contains
elements of GM soya.
