It would be interesting to speculate on how Americans would react if prominent Chinese military figures started claiming that operations of American companies with "close ties" to the US military anywhere close to China would be an unacceptable security risk.

Hutchison-Whampoa - we can spell it right even if the people who wrote the article can't - is an eminently respectable publicly held HK company with operations all over the world. Nobody has cited any evidence that they have ever allowed their facilities to be used for espionage or military purposes. The whole case is based on the fact that the CEO has friends in Beijing. If we practice restraint of trade for this slight cause, how are we going to complain when other countries behave the same way, to us or to others?

What happens to free trade?
