From what I hear, just the opposite is taking place. It is true that these decisions on who to go with are highly political. Ascend has lost deals due to this in the past, but Lucent has clout and is getting Ascend in the door in places where they otherwise would not have a chance. As is frequently mentioned in this thread, Chambers considers this merger a threat and will make statements to cast doubt. I do not believe that the customers that Ascend is penetrating take what he says as gospel.
