Astonishing News in Hydride Storage

(I posted this on SI/Ballard. FCVs will need hydrogen sensors.)

Jim, here is the single most promising development in hydrogen transportation that has so far occurred. The implications for Ballard et.al. should not be underestimated because in an accident, hydrides do not explode or even burn. Professor Craig Jensen of the University of Hawaii has been awarded honors from the Department of Energy for his research in improving hydride storage of hydrogen by two orders of magnitude. This may be sufficient for a range in excess of 300 miles with an acceptable weight for personal vehicles.

"Research conducted by Jensen has led to the development of a new catalyst, or a substance that accelerates the release of hydrogen from the metals, thus dramatically reducing the temperature required for rapid desorption of hydrogen. This discovery could greatly reduce the weight and cost of fuel cell systems, making hydrogen-powered vehicles more practical and economically feasible."
