To Thread - AFCI's investment in CERENT CORP attracts interest from a large Networker...CSCO

Sonet Savior

The network of the future will be all optical, and Synchronous Optical Network (Sonet) will be the technology that gets us there. That's the philosophy behind startup Cerent Corp. (Petaluma, Calif.), which publicly debuted last week with a Sonet switching system that aggregates optical interface-supplied voice and data traffic onto core network backbones. The Cerent 454 is aimed at carriers looking for a higher-bandwidth, more scalable alternative to time-division multiplexer (TDM) networking systems. This 240-Gbit/s switch will let carriers build optical transport networks-and resolve bottlenecks-between the high-speed access and core networks they are currently deploying, the company says. It has gained the attention of some heavy hitters, including Cisco Systems Inc. (San Jose, Calif.),
which led the second round of Cerent financing to the tune of $53 million.

=====================================================================

Both Cernet and AFC make a good combination for a company like CSCO to quickly enter the telecom market. These companies have products which can compete head to head with LU, ALA and Nortel.

Does anybody recall AFC's total investment in CERNET. I believe it is 7%.
