Harvey,

SCMP is the oldest English newspaper for Asia (I think). It was one of the tools that my teachers used to teach me English when I was a kid. The credibility should be OK but the article itself clearly stated that it was not factual, just something they "believe".

It is unfortunate that governments from both sides throw out these trial balloons on the eve of big pow wows. May be the decision is already made to allow China to join the WTO and the US is trying to milk the carrot to the max. China, in the mean time, are hinting at retaliation if US comes down too hard.

A bunch of high tech companies already strongly lobbied Washington to lay off China. Can't find the article right now but I believe the list includes DELL, CSCO, HWP etc. I suppose Boeing and others also don't want the rice bowl disturbed.

Using common sense, China is not a telecom power house, just a huge market. Why should they care what 3G standard is adopted when they are so far behind? My guess is whoever gives them a piece of the pie is going to win. May be the pie in this case is US supporting China's entry to the WTO.

I think the thread is making a little too big of a deal out of the article. Then again, if it gives us a 10 point bounce on Monday, I won't complain.

Ramsey
