I don't think CSCO will be making any other major acquisitions in the near term. Keep in mind that CSCO management will be straining to efficiently digest STRM over the next several months. It takes a lot to merge two large companies' core operations and their far flung international sales and distribution empires.

If anything, the CSCO/STRM merger ups the ante on the other networking companies to keep up with CSCO in terms of size and product breadth. The question we should be thinking about is how the other networking companies will merge with each other and with other tech companies to keep up with CSCO.

Scott McNealy of Sun Microsystems has stated on numerous occasions that Sun is focusing on corporate intranets as the next major money making opportunity. This appears to be Sun's strategy for avoiding price competition from cheap Windows NT-based servers. It is hard to believe that Sun can achieve this strategy without entering the networking business, presumably through an acquisition of an existing networking company.

Any thoughts or comments?
