I received this remarkable message from someone close to me this afternoon. Since it relates directly to the emerging telephone industry, I thought I'd share it with you all:

George, I just signed up for an internet telephony long distance service called I-link. The voice quality is totally normal and they charge 4.9 cents/min between here and Seattle. The highest they charge throughout the US is around 9 cents I think. But what I think is neat is they give you a new local # that is not wired to your house. You can have your phone forwarded there for voice mail. That # will automatically recognize faxes and store them. You can tell it where and when to fax those messages or just down load them off the internet. So essentially, there is no need for a dedicated fax line anymore, or for a fax machine. It has a travel card too that charges only about 11 cents per minute and no per use fee like ATT. Anyway, I was thinking you could use it as a dedicated fax # and also use the travel card when you go out of town. I could even leave you voice mails and faxes with no long distance charges.

The whole system is run on computers with no switches. The sales guy
says ATT has installed its last phone switch. I wonder what DCTC is
doing financing everything to buy an obsolete system. After trying this out, I can see switches are a thing of the past.

It is sure going to save my new business some money. We were going to
buy a fax line, voice mail, and fax machine. Now we can do much more
for $5/month plus cheap long distance. Like if a client sends us a fax, my partners (in a different city) don't need to fax it to me.
We can both look at it on the internet. In a few months they are coming out with a system that gives you internet access on an ISDN line and built into that line are up to 8 regular phone lines that you can use at the same time. I figure a small business would pay $300 to $400 per month to get the equivalent from local phone companies. I am not buying US West stock.!!
