A couple of years ago as I realized my life was almost over (50 looming ominously ahead, motherhood winding down along with my hormones) I decided to spit in the eye of old age and got certified.
It was not that difficult- and the training was much harder than diving on cruises or at resorts where they do everything except breathe for you on dives.
I lied about physical problems on the application though- if you tell them you have heart or asthma troubles, you have to jump through hoops getting medical releases, and doctors don't want to sign those because then they think they can get sued. SO I lied.
Somewhere on some other threads, I wrote about it- how I refused to remove my air-one of the tests- and had an underwater fight with the instructor-I'll see if I can find them.
Ish, I'm so glad I did it- just like I'm glad I went rock climbing with the kids and horseback riding in Mexico even though I may be unable to walk for a day or two afterward. SOmetimes I start believing in my own mortality, view myself as winding down, and doing these things, surviving, even succeeding, helps me realize it ain't over-and maybe I am immortal.
