I guess I could see an 'alliance', but a merger? Dell has been a strong growth story that is beginning to slow as they get larger and larger. I can't see Dell playing second fiddle after building his own company. Gerstner signed a five year contract last year I believe (although I suppose he could always step aside). There is also the question of market cap, Dell with any premium would not be too far from IBM's. Finally, what happens to potential appreciation of Dell's stock in any merger? I could see a pretty strong selloff were this to occur (come to think of it, maybe it's already started <ggg>). This does not jive with what Gerstner has been saying in regard to the 'slow fade' of the PC and rise of internet appliances.
