BigK,

Thanks for posting the two gene therapy abstracts. It seems you scanned them? Tables are missing but there is sufficient to see what is happening. The first abstract on the diabetic rats maybe repeats the January abstract but will know for sure when I see full abstract.

The second abstract is oriented towards a safety question. They wanted to check whether the channel gene when injected into the penis got out through the blood stream and was taken up by cells in other parts of the body. The technique called RT-PCR can recognise whether the channel gene is being expressed, ie making channel protein. It appears there was no evidence that this was happening in other parts of the bodies of the rats. Dr Christ has mentioned in previous publications that a tourniquet, like a penile band might be used to contain the channel gene within the penis as it is being taken up by the penile cells. Maybe this will not be necessary if uptake is localised near the site of injection.

I am not a doctor and I do not know what the consequences of cells in the vascular system taking up small quantities of the channel gene. It is however, as I mentioned previously, of great interest to me as a Vivus investor to discover whether this gene therapy approach can be used to treat other diseases where increased smooth muscle relaxation might be advantageous. Because the latest abstract suggests that uptake is localised, it might be possible to target other tissues effectively with naked DNA.
