Microsoft owns a big stake in Comcast, which is one of the major cable companies after TWX and T/TCOMA. They also have holdings in some European companies, I believe.

The problem with getting more of them is that there's a lot of competition. Comcast is already aggressive in buying up smaller companies. But so is Paul Allen's Charter. And AT&T is expected to be agressive about getting more households on its cable net (either through buyouts or agreements) once the TCI merger is complete within a few months.

MSFT has so much more cash that it makes sense for them to lock up potentially lucrative businesses. MSFT can probably be more aggressive than even AT&T. So much cash---and don't have to issue that corporate debt that AT&T must. If MSFT picks up the largest chunk of cable companies that is within regulations, they could be one of the biggest cable operators. MSN Internet Cable access would be winner. All this based upon the assumption that cable internet will be the fastest mode for access to the web. My assumption could be incorrect but would cable not be faster than the other high speed services?

If it is possible for alternatives to cable to attain the same speed, then maybe it is better to do deals for customized MSN for ISPs and help in the potential sales of Windows2000.

It must be a very tough call for MSFT but I guess they may be leaning towards having the portal site --- and working on deals for it. They may be phasing out internet access services. However, that could lead to a reduction on hits on MSN ----- and that would be bad.
My guess is that they will continue doing all things---ISP, portal MSN, cable and other high speed access, Joint ventures with cable operators. They may just not be ready to commit to any one strategy at this point or they already have decided and are working on deals.

That was a confusing post---meaning I don't have clue about their strategy!!
