Since Video reception is, presumably, your "driving force" for upgrade, the Pentium III with their SSE should be looked at.
But first, check with Real Networks, or whomever, and see if their current - or future - software will support the Pentium IIII features.
For reference, the "G2" version of Real Player contains specific streaming optimizations WRITTEN by Intel engineers. If this "practice" continues, Pentium III SSE optimizations may be forthcoming for video applications and the Pentium III would be the logical choice.
However, if you don't need or want the fastest - you night want to look at 433 MHz Celerons that will be on the market as of tomorrow.
As for brands, HP, Dell, Sony are all very good - as is Compaq. I have no direct experience with Gateway.
