do you believe that AOL will leave ICQ alone forever?

I hope so, but I doubt it. I'm sure they'll figure out some way to use it. What they'll probably never be able to do is put ads on the user interface. That would freak out too many of ICQ's users (many of whom seem to be easily disturbed by such things). I also doubt they'll put "AOL" anywhere on the service anytime soon. The company seems to realize that its corporate name is not universally respected. They seem content to let the alternatives -- "CompuServe", "Netscape", and "ICQ" -- stand alone to appeal to their unique markets.

I compared it awhile ago to the way Disney uses its name. Few of the movies or TV shows that come out of their studio bear the "Disney" name because it just doesn't work for a violent and profane action thriller or a sexy love story. Putting "Disney" on movies released under the Hollywood, Touchstone, or Miramax labels would dilute the value of the Disney name and probably turn off much of the film's potential audience.

"ICQ" is the Hollywood Pictures of AOL. It can be raunchy and maybe even a bit nasty at times, but fun for those who like that kind of thing. "Netscape" is now AOL's "Miramax".
