This seems to indicate one of 2 alternatives, either we are capacity constrained and demand is increasing, or that production is being held back in an effort to boost pricing. What do you think the true situation is?

I suspect that the abnormally rapid rate of shrinks over the last few years are responsible the decrease in the number of chips shipped. (i.e. with each shrink it is possible to put more on each chip. If these shrinks happen faster than normal then the number of chips shipped will actually decrease.) It would be interesting to see the number of transistors shipped instead since I suspect that that took a hit in 96, but has consistently climbed before and after that point in history.

I consider (and hope that) the ASP is a much more important indicator. When it drops we have a problem.
