Hi again -- On the subject of photonics plays, I also think that Uniphase is an interesting bet. They have a subsidiary called UTP = Uniphase Telecommunications Produces. It used to be known as "United Technologies Photonics" since it was originally a spin-off of United Technologies research labs before it was bought. UTP used to make detectors (photodiodes) but is now also moving into things used on the transmit side of a fiber-optic link, like modulators. Most of the stuff they do is very high-end (i.e. high-speed and expensive stuff for telecom). Again, this augurs well for the company, since telecom deregualtion and the coming competition will mean that the big telco service providers will be buying lots of new and expensive equipment.
