I think one way the established players will be able to persevere is to accept the change. However, they won't be able to do that because it will kill their current revenues. The only other way would be to make digital distribution easier than going to Tower Records so that the vast number of consumers basically unaware of mp3 can be won over. From what I've seen so far this isn't going to happen soon either. So companies like mp3.com (see siliconinvestor.com
will continue to make inroads and may eventually mortally wound most of the established players.

I wouldn't bet against mp3 in the next year although I think Cuban (of bcst) is correct in assessing that eventually streaming technologies unknown today will win. However, affordable wireless net access is at least 2 years away so that is more pie in the sky at this point. As an aside I own some Nextel (nxtl) because I think they will eventually reap enormous growth from this development and wireless net access in general.
