It's very simple. Normal posts use variable pitch fonts and will automatically wrap lines to fit the window.

Anytime you want to insert text which requires fixed-font spacing, you have two options: Make the entire post fixed font, in which case you have to insert your own CR-LF (carraige return - line feed), or surround the fixed-font text with the PRE tag and end-tags (PRE-formatted):
