Internationally renowned performers, local musicians, and noted jazz scholars are scheduled to examine the legacy and magnitude of Parker's contributions to music. Max Roach, Dr. Billy Taylor, Jay McShann, and Milt Jackson are among the two dozen guest speakers and performers set to recognize and celebrate the artistic genius and musical legacy of Kansas City native Charles Christopher Parker Jr. aka "Bird."
The two-day Charlie Parker Symposium will include sessions examining Parker's early years in Kansas City, his move to New York and his role in creating bebop, the vocal traditions of bebop, Parker's performance styles, and his recording career. There will also be on an online chat room, "Remembering Bird," featuring a live roundtable discussion by musicians who knew and performed with Parker.
