MaoII: I assume that McCarthy is referring to the $2.9 billion in tax credits available which we have discussed on this thread in the last week. When COMPAQ planned on acquiring Tandem and Digital it would have carefully calculated the effect of tax credits on the total cost of the acquisition and on the future net profits of the integrated COMPAQ. The company should enjoy the benefits of its planning. It is not cheating, cooking the books, or distorting to use the assets it has acquired wisely. In my view COMPAQ will use part of the tax credits available to meet the original estimates of 35 and I hope they will get it to 38. Of course, analysts will jump on this and claim it is an attempt to hide poor operational results. But we don't know that they are poor yet.

McCarthy made several statements which appear to be unsupported assumptions. He says that in the short term, it will go to $25 unless it goes to $38. I said that, too, but I don't get paid to do research.
