Media Metrix: AMZN website traffic soars 16% in February
Media Metrix posted incredible increases in AMZN website traffic for February today. In a month with 10% fewer days than January, the combined home and work visits to AMZN's website were 10.516 million, or 16.4% higher than January's visits, which had totalled 9.033 million.
For comparison, many other large website visits were up 2 to 5% in the same time interval. Total web universe traffic increased 1.0% in the interval.

I have also reprinted my SI posting regarding the comparison of January to December data below. Media Metrix reported its measurements of website traffic for January 1999. I have included the Media Metrix data for AMZN for November and December, as well as the comparable data for Netscape, Yahoo.com and the Media Metrix total universe internet traffic data as controls.
Here are the numbers of unique visitors…..
January 99 Amazon.com 9.033 million Netscape.com 18.001 million Yahoo.com 29.198 million Total Universe 58.383 million
December 98 Amazon.com 9.134 million Netscape.com 17.548 million Yahoo.com 26.843 million Total Universe 56.781 million

Given the seasonality of bricks and mortar book store holiday sales, one might have expected a dramatic decrease in January 99 website traffic, compared to December 98. Based on these data, it appears likely that Joy Covey was correct in the Q4-98 conference call with her prediction that Q1-99 revenues might exceed Q4-98's. By way of recap, in Q1-98, the revenues were $87M, vs $66M in Q4-97.
Another cautionary note for AMZN bears is to be factor in how much impact the Shop-the-Web referral fees will contribute to minimizing AMZN's losses in Q1-99.
Good luck to all, short and long.
