Smart Investor, I don't think they want to abandon the MSN portal site. They just want to unload the ISP just like they did up here in Canada--sold to AT&T.
I agree that MSFT is undervalued and that is how the Bill Gates and company want it (i think). Keep the stock on a steady climb to ensure those equity puts never get excercised----more "Revenue" for the company.(actually, it never shows up in the Income statement---even better--no taxes). Microsoft knows they are undervalued but just want to ensure that their employees keep benefitting from stock options, especially new employees. Double the stock every year is a good plan. If for some reason, the stock does not move as well, get aggressive in share buybacks. It is just too easy for CFO Maffei.

Microsoft is on a Windows2000 mission. I know about Linux but lets get serious---I can't believe so many people get taken in by all that hype. I think the hype helps MSFT in the trial which is good.
Same goes for that AOL/Netscape/Sun deal. I bet both Sunw and AOL executives are paranoid to far greater degrees than MSFT will be.
Microsoft has in reality built a strong bond to corporations and consumers that will be extremely difficult to break by anyone, no matter how great the products are. Bill Gates has got them hooked and that is how I would sum it up.
