You're confusing slipping a date with never having one or refusing to let people know what's going on. Even win95 eventually had an official final release date and this was made public well in advance of the actual date. Can you think of any major product announcement that didn't have a publicly available release date? Finding out from a news service that a product has finally been released is not the way things usually work. This is highly unusual to say the least.
