I get conflicting information on by which date you would have had to buy MSFT to be eligible to have your MSFT position split.

You get the split as long as you buy before the day it starts trading split. That's all there is to it. Ignore the record date.

Between the record date and the ex-date when it trades split and "ex-dividend" the shares trade with the split shares included. Notice that we're already past the record date but the stock isn't trading at half price yet? My Schwab account currently says: "MICROSOFT CORP WITH STOCK SPLIT SHARES" and the number of shares shown reflect the pre-split number.
