Oh, penni, it got better! (I should have kept my mouth shut, though, since he wasn't my friend after all. He and my husband had been friends since high school.) We sat down--after he called his mother at my very firm suggestion. I knew him since high school too! Yes, the omission of the word friend is significant.) And during the conversation this s**t for brains actually had the utter insensitivity to relate the story of an ill-fated trip to visit historic Chestertown, MD. What ruined the trip, you see, was that he had not guaranteed the hotel room for late arrival. You guessed it! When they strolled into the hotel in the wee hours, there was no room and all the nice places to stay were fully booked. He sat there on my chair, expecting me to share his indignation. I had to stifle the smile. The friendship fizzled, although I never said a word about it afterward to my husband.
