Ericsson not ruling out deal with Cisco
07:14 AM ET 03/22/99
STOCKHOLM, March 22 (Reuters) - Telecoms group AB LM
Ericsson would prefer to continue as an independent company, but
was not ruling out other scenarios such as a merger with U.S.
Cisco Systems Inc , a Swedish business magazine said.
"I don't want to speculate, but one can't rule out any
combinations. The only certain thing is that we can't afford to
buy (Cisco), but they can buy us," Ericsson chairman Lars
Ramqvist was quoted as saying in an interview with Veckans
Affarer.
"We would rather continue on our own, through adding data
products to strengthen our position within mobile telecom....We
can't rule out anything. There can be offers in the future that
we will have to decide on."
He declined to comment on whether the second half of the
year would be better than the first half.
"I can't say anything about that today. The only thing I
know is that we will see some loss in the first half due to
restructuring and launching new phones and other products," he
told the magazine.
