GST Telecommunications Enters Joint Build Agreement With Level 3 Communications and Nextlink

Venture Gives GST Network Presence in San Diego Area

March 22, 1999 09:00 AM
VANCOUVER, Wash., March 22 /PRNewswire/ -- GST Telecommunications, Inc. GSTX , building on its robust presence as a full-service Integrated Communications Provider (ICP) in the billion-dollar California telecommunications market, announced it has entered into a joint build agreement with Level 3 Communications LVLT and Nextlink NXLK to participate in the construction of a San Diego metropolitan area network.
Under the terms of the agreement, GST will participate in a joint build of approximately 26 route miles of a 62-mile, multiple-conduit system currently being deployed by Level 3 and Nextlink in the San Diego area. By entering the agreement, GST is constructing its San Diego network at a substantial savings.

"Our agreement with Level 3 and Nextlink is just another example of our commitment to seeking out and creating synergistic relationships that strengthen our infrastructure and West Coast presence," stated Joe Basile, president and chief executive officer of GST. "Entering into agreements with other carriers in ventures such as this allows us to reduce our capital expenditures at the same time we continue to enhance our network infrastructure."

GST's San Diego network will have direct connectivity to its Virtual Integrated Transport and Access (VITA) network. The network combines GST's voice and data networks onto a single networking platform providing for improved economics and versatility of services. The VITA network utilizes a combination of IP, packet, frame, and cell technology, and next generation switching equipment in conjunction with the Central Office switches GST operates throughout the western United States.

Level 3 is building the first international network optimized for Internet Protocol technology. The Level 3 multi-conduit Network will combine both local and long distance networks, connecting customers end-to-end across the U.S. and in Europe and Asia.

GST Telecommunications, Inc., an Integrated Communications Provider (ICP) headquartered in Vancouver, Wash., provides a broad range of integrated telecommunications products and services, including local dial tone, Internet, long distance, and enhanced data services throughout California and the United States. Facilities-based GST continues to focus on its western regional strategy by anchoring its next generation networks in local markets and connecting them via long haul fiber networks.
