Article...M'bishi Electric To Market Home API Chip In U.S. From 2000.....

March 22, 1999

Nikkei English News : TOKYO (Nikkei)--Mitsubishi Electric Corp. (6503) will market semiconductors for the Home API interface in the U.S. from spring 2000, company sources said Saturday. It expects annual revenue from the product to reach 30 billion yen by 2002.

Home API is a new set of program interfaces enabling software applications to discover and control home electric devices. The new technology will enable consumers to operate home electric appliances such as air-conditioners and sprinklers by sending messages to computers at home connected to those devices.

It is initiated by six companies including Microsoft Corp., Intel Corp. and Compaq Computer Corp.

Microsoft is planning to incorporate the function into its Windows operating system by the end of 2000. Mitsubishi Electric plans to start shipping sample semiconductors from next spring and begin mass marketing from 2001.

The Japanese company joined the Home API roster last year and helped set the specifications.
