Just spent an hour or two going through all of Dr. Furness's papers at the HIT's website database and I can see why the VRD system is so important to him (since it didn't exist - why he had to create it). Advanced as the equipment is that is currently available to him, he could do wonders with a compact version of the VRD. I would guesstimate that getting rid of the uncomfortable and relatively bulky HMD's that they are using would advance his work very quickly. The ability to superimpose a virtual reality interface over a real image in any lighting condition is also going to help his work. From what I can tell, most of his HMD systems are non-color displays and are limited to less than VGA quality (I remember seeing 254x236 pixels mentioned in one of the papers as the resolution). The Videoconferencing/Multi-user interaction also mentions that Video capture is at a respectable but not earthshattering 20 frames/sec. (This needs to eventually increase to approx. 60 frames/sec.)
