Azeris Detain Russian Plane Bound For Yugoslavia

<< An Azeri official said Tuesday Azerbaijan had detained a Russian cargo plane carrying six MiG jet fighters destined for Yugoslavia, which is subject to an international arms embargo.

''I confirm that we have detained a Russian 'Ruslan' cargo plane which is carrying six jet fighters to Yugoslavia,'' Vafa Guluzade, an adviser to President Haydar Aliyev, told Reuters. Russian officials were not immediately available for comment.

Guluzade said Baku was investigating the case but gave no further details.

The independent Azeri news agency Turan said the plane had landed in Baku on March 18 for refueling.

Quoting an unnamed official source, it said some 30 military personnel and engineers had been accompanying the MiG-21 and MiG-29 fighters . Turan said they had given their destination as Yugoslavia and had then changed it to North Korea.

Belgrade, a traditional ally of Moscow, has been subject to the arms embargo since the violent breakup of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s. Russia is opposed to threatened NATO air strikes against Yugoslav military targets over Belgrade's refusal to sign a peace accord for its unruly Kosovo province. >>

This should spice up the Russian visit to Washington.
