My theory is that a lot of the pessimism is being generated by analysts (such as Kumar) who rely mainly on re-sellers for information . Some re-sellers are fighting COMPAQ's transition to direct. Some re-sellers are hurting as a result of this switch. They are reporting the market as they see it but their view is partial and biased. Add this to the general background news of normal seasonal softness and declining ASPs, and you have the recipe for the gloom and doom. I think that DELL has a way to go down. Even though COMPAQ has already had its punishment, I think DELL will weigh heavily on the sector and COMPAQ may suffer some more in sympathy.
