China Expects Lower Internet Fees
Will Help Boost PC Sales This Year
Dow Jones Newswires

BEIJING -- China expects sales of personal computers to reach 5.1 million units in 1999, an increase of 25% from 1998, Xinhua News Agency reported Tuesday.

However, Chinese computer manufacturers likely will face stiffer competition this year, as many large electrical-appliance makers have diversified into computer manufacturing, said Zhang Qi, director of the Ministry of Information Industry's Information Products Administration Department.

"This will increase both China's production capacity and market supply of computers," Xinhua quoted Ms. Zhang as saying. "Computer manufacturers need to improve their technology and after-sales services in order to consolidate their market position."

China manufactured 4.4 million personal computers last year. Around 72% were made by Chinese computer companies, the report said.

Ms. Zhang also said that the recent cut in telephone and Internet fees will boost PC sales this year. In addition, the development of more software for educational and family-entertainment use will help fuel the growth in sales, she said.

Weak consumer demand for personal computers hurt sales last year. In 1998, PC sales in the communist country grew only 13.9%, compared with 41.3% growth in 1997, the China Daily said earlier this month.
