OK, the next speaker after Mr. Stone was Stewart Nelson. Remember this name please. I don't think he'll become a household name but he will be someone who makes things happen over at Novell.

He's message was mostly about Keeping Commitments and delivering products that work and are on time. Dr. Schmidt has tossed him the responsibility of developing 10 new ZENs (directory-enabled products) for this year. He also has to make these products support internet standards, he has to work with partners to develop their products and to always focus on the end-user.

He also announces that NDSv8 will ship (not beta but working) within the next 60 days. Active Directory???

During his presentation, IDG (publishes InfoWorld magazine) presented Novell with an award for ZENworks - Product of the Year.

Mr. Nelson also talked about priorities for Novell in 99. Those include:
Total directory solutions #1 priority
Deliver more new product
Continue to focus on shipping QUALITY products on time (like NetWare 5).

There were several demos during his speech including biometrics (using fingerprints or your face as authentication for network logon) and single sign-on (IE, sign onto the network and you don't have to remember passwords for things like Notes or Oracle).

They also demoed Citrix thin-client integration with NDS. They logged onto a Citrix MetaFrame server using NDS and got ZENworks to establish the desktop via NDS. They showed this by moving from one PC to another and having the exact desktop follow them. They they launched a browser on a 3rd PC and accessed the SAME desktop via a browser! This is very important in my opinion for several reason but the most interesting ones would be for mobile users.

They also demoed native HTTP on a NetWare 5 server meaning that the server was a webserver. What they did was use a browser to navigate through the file system (much like what MSFT wanted MSIE to be). All the security was handled by NDS. So if you need to get back into your PC at the office from home, launch your browser, got to your companies website, log-on and browser your home directory on the server.

He also talked about Novell and NDS driving the back-end of the internet. Since the internet is run on devices from Cisco, Lucent, Nortel etc and they will be incorporating NDS into their devices, Novell will become the internet standard for maintaining the internet's hardware and services.

They demoed a Lucent switch which they were able to configure using a Cisco switch's configuration. Something that until yesterday was merely a pipedream. NDS allows you to manage different hardware from the same console. This is very big news because companies will no longer be locked into one vendor for all their telecom needs. This will create a new way of thinking and break the old model of single vendor networks.

OK, I have to run again.....
