It's not my intention to use a box to circumvent the rules; at no time will I hold the short position alone. My intent is to make some money on the short-term dips of a stock I have held and will continue to hold long term.

I'm not sure I understand. How can you make money on a short term dip unless you sell the long position (which would however briefly leave you holding the short position only)? Regardless of your intentions, this is still (effectively) allowing a short position to be opened on a downtick.
